When it comes to how our government works, few institutions affect citizens more directly than Congress, and specifically the U.S. House of Representatives. Every bill that becomes federal law must pass through this chamber, where elected representatives give voice to their communities’ people.

Most Cabarrus County residents are represented in North Carolina’s 8th Congressional District. At the same time, the northwestern portion of the county falls within District 6, which also includes Davidson, Davie, and Rowan counties, as well as part of Forsyth County.

The U.S. House of Representatives, often referred to simply as “the House” or, collectively with the Senate, as Congress, is one of the two chambers of the federal legislature. It was designed to provide representation based on population, ensuring that every American has a voice in the creation of national laws.

The House has 435 voting members, each representing roughly 750,000 residents in their congressional district. Members serve two‑year terms, meaning they face reelection every election cycle, keeping them closely accountable to voters at home.

A representative’s job is broad and incredibly important. Here’s what they do on behalf of the people they serve:

1. Legislating — Writing and Voting on Federal Laws
   Members of the House draft, sponsor, debate, and vote on bills addressing national issues, from healthcare and education to infrastructure and defense. A bill must pass both the House and the Senate before reaching the President to become law.
2. Serving on Committees
   Much of the real work happens in House committees, where representatives specialize in topics such as Budget, Education, Agriculture, or Foreign Affairs. Committees hold hearings, analyze data, and shape legislation before it reaches the full House floor.
3. Representing Local Interests
   Each representative advocates for the priorities and needs of their district, securing federal funding, supporting local projects, and helping residents navigate federal agencies. For Cabarrus County, this can include infrastructure improvements, business development, and support for public education.
4. Oversight and Accountability
   The House plays a crucial role in holding the federal government accountable. Members oversee federal agencies, investigate inefficiencies or misconduct, and ensure taxpayer dollars are spent appropriately.
5. Participating in Impeachment Proceedings
   The House has the exclusive power to impeach federal officials, including the President. The Senate then holds the trial, but the process begins in the House, reflecting its direct connection to the people.

North Carolina currently has 14 congressional districts, each represented by one member in the U.S. House of Representatives. Cabarrus County is represented primarily in District 8 and partially in District 6, giving residents input through two distinct congressional voices in Washington, D.C.

Together with the state’s two U.S. Senators, North Carolina’s representatives make up the delegation responsible for advancing the state’s interests at the national level.
